Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque, a soft, sticky film formed by bacteria that is constantly forming on teeth and gums due to insufficient cleaning.
A proper oral hygiene brushing and flossing daily is the key to avoid this. It is very important to avoid gingivitis in time to prevent it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dentist.
Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. Anyone with symptoms of gingivitis is still in time to receive early treatment before the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place get compromised.
This first stage of gingivitis may seem devoid of importance, but, if it is left untreated, it can evolve in another disease, called periodontitis, which causes permanent damage to the teeth and jaws.
The most visible signs of gingivitis include red and swollen gums that may bleed when brushed and shrinkage of the gums, which they appear to have been retracted from the teeth.
Gingivitis can cause the formation of pockets between the teeth and gums, where plaque and leftover food can accumulate causing bad breath or bad taste, even in the early stages of the disease.
To control gingivitis and prevent its development, the main thing is maintaining good teeth cleaning practices, brushing teeth at least twice a day, and flossing properly, to take out food leftovers and avoid plaque formation.
It is also important to have a good nutrition to help keep the jaw and teeth healthy, avoid eating snuff and maintain regular checkups with your dentist.
